THE SITUATION

A nationally recognized hospital in Chicago had been storing outdated patient information in their "storage area" also known as their basement. With multiple doors leading downstairs to their storage site, they were in need of a quick way to securely lockup and organize all of the various medical documents.

The debate was on: what type of enclosures would they need? At first glance, they considered going with chain-link fencing. After speaking with a local SpaceGuard Products distributor, however, they quickly realized that chain-link simply wouldn't make the cut.  As the conversation continued, there were a few key factors shaping the purchasing decision:
  • The cages would need to be easily modified and added onto as they cleared space in their basement.
    • Advantage: FordLogan Woven Wire
  • Even though the documents were being stored in the basement out of plain sight, the hospital was concerned with the overall look of the fencing. This was a hospital after all, not a farm.
    • Advantage: FordLogan Woven Wire (resilient polyester powder coat vs. cheap galvanized finish)
  • Due to the severity of the situation, the hospital needed the materials onsite within the week.
    • Advantage: FordLogan Woven Wire (stock material available in 48 hours or less!)
THE SOLUTION

After coming to the decision to use FordLogan, the local dealer took field measurements and sent his sketches to the exceptional sales team at SpaceGuard. The team put a quote together along with approval drawings within a few short hours. By utilizing standard sizes, the SpaceGuard team and their distributor were able to get the materials produced and shipped in 2 days!

At the jobsite, the installation team took over getting all of the cages erected in the same day. With the easy modular design and reversible doors, the installers made quick work of the secured enclosures. This was a project designed for FordLogan systems: easy to install, visually appealing, readily available, and inexpensive to fit within any budget. FordLogan...GETS THE JOB DONE!

Feature Friday: FordLogan Lockers

Did you know that apartments make up 51% of ALL housing in New York City? According to figures, there are over 1.5 million apartments in NYC! The continuing trend of increased populations in urban areas means housing developments need to continuously adapt to accommodate their ever-changing tenants.  Likewise, as space continues to become more scarce, apartment and condo owners scramble to create additional units.

Even though an apartment may lack square footage, there are still opportunities to create additional storage for each and every tenant in a building. By using storage lockers/enclosures, each resident gains the ability to have an external storage space.  This is a great feature for tenants that have bikes, seasonal/holiday items, luggage, and any other oddball items that take up space.

FordLogan systems can be designed using standard sized components or even custom designed to fit your space. As shown in the photos below, an install team added custom-sized wood inserts to act as divider shelves.

If you're interested in a tenant storage locker with pre-hung doors, welded wire shelves, and/or sheet metal back panels, then visit: http://spaceguardproducts.com/wire_mesh_storage_lockers.aspx

Keeping Servers Safe

Data centers and colocation facilities have some of the highest security available. They utilize motion-activated cameras, biometric locks, 24-hour security guards, and that's just to enter the building!  Upon making your way into a server room, you'll undoubtedly cross additional security measures to prevent any unauthorized access. After passing through all of these safety measures, you'll face the final frontier for securing all that equipment....wire mesh partitions!

With stringent requirements for air quality, FordLogan woven wire systems are a perfect fit as they do not require field cutting or drilling like some cheap alternatives.  Instead, all parts (doors, panels, posts) simply bolt together in the field through pre-punched holes.

The benefits go beyond the cleanliness. In fact, one of the best reasons for sourcing FordLogan woven wire cages is that they are stocked for quick shipment. That means as you get a contract for floor space, we can get you the materials you need in 48 hours (when painted in standard gray finish). Stock heights can be found HERE.

If the Cap Fits…

Not all things are created equal, and not all things should be repeated just because that’s the way they were always done. In fact, if that were the case, wouldn’t we still be using asbestos in tiles and pipes for its resistance against fire and chemicals?  Now we know different.

Woven wire mesh partitions use a top capping bar to help stiffen the fence run when a ceiling isn’t present.  There is a long standing specification for those top capping bars to consist of 2-1/4” by 1” steel channel.  This channel is oversized versus the partition panels allowing U-bolts to loop below the top frame of the panels and bolt through the capping channel.  This size requirement exists because it’s been used for decades.

Let us examine a few ways it might be done better:

#1 Cutting Down on Hard Costs

Top capping bars are typically sent to customers in either 8’ or 10’ lengths and cut to size in the field with the purpose of bridging as many panel intersections as possible to optimize stability in the system.  Not only will heavier material take more time to cut and remove burrs, but it costs more money in both materials and freight.  FordLogan top capping bar is 1-1/2” x 1/2” channel which reduces these costs.

#2 CAPturing More Stability

The common 2-1/4” capping channel is designed to be a full 1” larger than the panel framing it is intended to attach to. Between the size difference between channel and frame and the use of U-bolts, the capping channel tends to slip and move, particularly if not fastened tightly.  FordLogan top capping bar fits snuggly over the panel below it and through bolts directly to the panel ensuring maximum stability, not to mention cleaner looking transitions between consecutive pieces.

#3 Reducing Connection Time

The use of U-bolts for connection are difficult to install when standing on one side of the cage. That, or another person is required to help with the attachment.  FordLogan top capping bar through bolts directly to the panel regardless of where a single installer is standing.  Additionally, it requires half of the hex nuts used on U-bolts further reducing installation time.

Not all things are created equal, and not all things should be repeated just because that’s the way they were always done.  There is no argument, FordLogan’s proprietary design for its top capping bar is dimensionally smaller than the standard specification.  But given the cost and performance advantages, there is no argument on whether its design is better than or equal to the specification.  Now we know different.

As Above, So Below: Complete Mezzanine Protection

Upper Level Storage Enclosure

The Situation
Customer with a two-level mezzanine needed a way to protect their materials and equipment on both levels.  Their biggest concern was timing; they needed a way to lockup the upper level immediately. The enclosure beneath the mezzanine would need to be a custom height in certain areas in order to fit properly within overhead structures.  The last key item was having a hinge door with emergency egress in one area of the mezzanine structure.

The Solution
With standard sized systems stocked and ready for quick shipment, the upper level enclosure was able to be shipped within 48 hours!  In order to meet proper OSHA safety protocols, a hinge door with a panic bar was equipped at one end of the mezzanine.  For the areas beneath the mezzanine, custom height partitions were supplied in a few different areas while other were able to utilize standard 10'h material.

With FordLogan woven wire systems being inexpensive, easy to install, and available for quick shipment, the customer was able to protect their products AND their people. Contact SpaceGuard Products today to get your quote on a secured storage cage for your mezzanine.

Woven Wire: A Flexible Advantage

Watch Out For Falling Objects...

The Challenge

An International leader in Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS) was evaluating different protective guarding technologies to include around a large custom designed system.  The solution not only needs to meet OSHA machine guarding specifications that properly prevent personnel from coming in contact with the automated equipment, but it also needed to provide a safety barrier should an item fall or slip from the machines. With a variety of mesh infills and framing members to choose from among these technologies, the solution would need to absorb the kinetic energy of any falling items.

One final consideration for this particular system was that space in the facility was limited.  Therefore a barrier guarding solution that has minimal growth due to the posts would allow them to work within the contrained space while still maximizing the number of standard components used to keep price and lead times down. In fact, they needed a guarding system that would be ready as soon as possible.

The Solution

The customer chose FordLogan woven wire partitions, a proven industry standard manufactured by SpaceGuard Products, an active member of the Woven Wire Products Association (wovenwire.org).  FordLogan utilizes a 10-ga diamond woven wire mesh that meets all code requirements by not allowing a 2-inch diameter ball to pass through the mesh with 50-lb of lateral force applied.  The woven wire is stronger than welded mesh options due to its shape and the triple intermediate crimp between wire intersections.  The design also makes the mesh more flexible to better withstand and absorb side impact.

Being that both time and space were limited, FordLogan was the perfect solution as its posts have minimal growth to the overall dimensions of the system unlike many welded wire systems. As a bonus, all of the doors can be reversed in the field (just in case the floor plan turns out to be different than was originally planned). The entire customized cage was designed to use all standard sized doors, panels, and posts. Doing this kept the price low and also allowed us to ship the material in 48 hours!

Slide Gates Just Got a Whole Lot Simpler

Do you remember when the height of a slide door, height of the partition system, and location of the door all dictated how you ordered and installed your woven wire partition?  If you haven’t installed a woven wire partition before, then that question alone probably sounds overly complicated.  After all, a stocked partition product should have common, simplified hardware in order to truly be considered flexible in design.

BEHOLD: FordLogan slide gates have been simplified to use one method of attachment regardless of size or configuration.  No more plates to sandwich the mesh.  No more nylon spacers.  And possibly best of all, we’ve cut down on how much hardware you need to sort through to install your slide gate.

FordLogan slide gates now all ship with three line posts and a common L-bracket to mount the track brackets (for Installation Guide, click HERE).  While the line posts do add some additional material and weight to your order, we have also designed out the need for a channel header above the door opening to keep the price affordable.

And get this, you can now configure your system to lock at an end OR at a corner post.

Sound too good to be true?  Well, we prefer simple and we know you’ll appreciate it too.

Warehouse Theft Prevention from Coast to Coast

All too often we hear news about another warehouse that has been burglarized; leaving the owners without expensive equipment, tools, and finished goods. If you've ever heard of the "7 P's", then you know that proper planning can help prevent poor performance. In the case of theft prevention, proper planning can start on a variety of levels and doesn't have to cost an exorbitant amount of money.

Some businesses start their planning with exterior protection, such as high-end surveillance equipment. However, what happens when criminals have breached the walls of your warehouse? Is there anything protecting your equipment on the INSIDE of your warehouse?

For interior protection, turn to FordLogan partitions as they have been providing customers with secured storage cages for decades. Systems are completely customizable and come with a variety of door lock options. Woven wire security cages are one of the simplest, and many times cheapest, ways to prevent unauthorized access to equipment and tools in your facility.

Recently, in Carson, CA a group of four people were arrested for stealing thousands of dollars worth of electronics from a warehouse.  Similarly, a trio was arrested in TN for stealing a safe from a business. Had these businesses kept their items in a secured FordLogan enclosure, they may have been able to prevent the thefts from occurring as the cages act as a natural deterrent. For proper theft prevention, planning should start with FordLogan wire security cages.
